Domaine Rossignol-Trapet is one of our favorite estates in Gevrey-Chambertin.
An estate born out of the historic Trapet family that today has holdings that are equally impressive and to die for. Smaller and a bit less known, Rossignol-Trapet has a collective of supporters and admirers that realized, as we have, that the past 20 vintages are absolutely stellar and the storied estate’s finest wines ever.
This property has really hit its stride. Turning out wines that are capturing the attention of Neal Martin at Vinous and John Gilman of View from the Cellar. Grand Cru Chambertin that are scoring at the top of the range, among the greats of Rousseau and Trapet. The quality to price ratio of any Rossignol-Trapet cuvee is very impressive, selling for ¼ or ⅓ the price of many of their peers. Their Grand Crus are easily some of the smart buys of the vintage for their relative affordability considering the global market and pricing of Grand Cru Chambertin today.
However, the true smart buy: The QPR star at Rossignol-Trapet is their old vine Gevrey-Chambertin village bottle. This wine is tremendous for the price and our #1 favorite village Gevrey-Chambertin to stock as it just simply consistently delivers year over year.
A blend of nine different village parcels, the average vine age in this cuvee is 60 years old! This is one of the key attributes of why this cuvee consistently overperforms. The old vine quality in the fruit adds depth while controlling ripeness. The wine is impeccably balanced with supple, refined tannins, even considering the use of 50% whole cluster, which adds to the aromatic complexity here.
This is just an absolute joy to taste, showcasing the beauty of the fruit against the intensity and savory qualities of the wine. Available in bottles and half-bottles!
