The “Super” Chianti
Benchmark Wine

Fontodi’s Vigna del Sorbo Chianti Classico Gran Selezione is one of the greatest vineyards in all of Chianti. A site that has historically produced one of the most lauded, loved and respected wines of the region.

Giovanni Manetti has evolved Vigna del Sorbo just as the Chianti zone has evolved over the past 40 years. One of the most powerful, structured and age-worthy Chiantis, Vigna del Sorbo prior to the Gran Selezione category used to include a portion of Cabernet Sauvignon making it at times hint towards a Super-Tuscan or more appropriately a Super-Chianti.

Vigna del Sorbo is a Super-Chianti not because it used to have Cabernet Sauvignon in the blend, but more so because it is such a special site that consistently yields exceptional wines. Giovanni Manetti and his family have embraced the unique characteristics of Vigna del Sorbo and as they have evolved in their farming and winemaking they have moved Vigna del Sorbo to one of the purest expressions of Sangiovese from galestro soils. The intensity of the galestro and the exposition of Vigna del Sorbo in the golden slopes of the Panzano amphitheater all come together to produce Sangiovese of great intensity, power, fruit and marvelous aromatics.

The 2019 Vigna del Sorbo is loaded with those graphite mineral aromas, great dark fruit and those grippy tannins that make this vintage standout for the long haul. Add to it the classic hightone Chianti mid-palate acidity and florality and this wine leaps from the glass. The added beauty is that this wine has a few years of bottle age at this point allowing the tannin structure and fruit to harmonize.

Cheers,
